As the side hustle queen, you know I believe that in order to meet your financial and life goals, you need multiple streams of income. You can’t get ahead living paycheck to paycheck.
Depending solely on your job is dangerous and oh so 1980. You need to be proactive, which means you’ll need to make more money.Having a side hustle, or side gig, helps you to make ends meet, pay down debt, and save money so you can live your life. Click To Tweet
My side hustles have helped me to pay bills when I quit my job without a plan (not smart) or needed to make a big purchase.
Most of us need the extra cash but don’t want to spend all of our free time getting it. I mean, who couldn’t use a few hundred dollars or more a month?
If that’s you, I’ve got you covered with my list of 25 side hustles you can start now.
This may, in fact, be my favorite side hustle on this list. If you have a lot of books lying around, instead of letting them collect dust, why don’t you sell them?
If you run out of books, try the thrift store and sell books that yield a high profit minus delivery fees (Bookscouter pays for postage). To save time and money, download the Bookscouter app to scan books while you’re out.
There are a lot of students out there who need extra help outside of the classroom. Large class sizes and diminishing school budgets make it hard for them to get the help they need. And this is where you come in.
If you’re good in a subject, such as Math, you can tutor local students. You shouldn’t have a hard time finding clients if you specialize in a high demand subject, such as Statistics or Calculus.
A degree and experience is recommended, but not required for you to be a successful tutor. Rates depend on subject areas and geographic location. Certified teachers, SAT Prep, and high-level math tutors can command higher rates. Find local clients by signing up with companies such as Wyzant or Tutorfind.
Rather tutor online? Sign up as a tutor with Chegg or Tutor.com.
Be a Secret Shopper
You can earn money and have your meal or shopping trip paid for if you become a secret or mystery shopper. As a secret shopper, you will pose as a customer and report on the customer service you receive.
It’s a secret because the employees don’t know you’ve been contracted by their employer.
You will be reimbursed for the trip and for any purchase you may have made while there. In order to be compensated, you may have to take photos (on the down low), answer questions, and submit a receipt to show proof of your visit.
You won’t get rich, but for the chance to get a free meal or oil change, it’s worth it.
Fill Out Surveys
This won’t make you rich, but filling out surveys can help you to earn additional money for groceries or pay bills. They’re easy and sometimes fun to do. If you are consistent, you can usually bring in about $200 or more each month from surveys.
Surveys help companies to conduct market research so they are better able to serve you, the consumer. Most are looking for responses from people of certain demographics, so you may not qualify for all of the surveys presented to you.
It’s a numbers game (in my opinion) and I try my best only to complete shorter surveys with the high payouts.
Another good thing I have found is that the more specialized the group they’re looking for, the higher the payout. I recently earned $40 just for rating music.
If you’re interested, here are several survey companies that are legit and pay well. I know people who’ve earned $100 a pop!
Get Paid to Watch Videos
I don’t know any other company I love as much as Swagbucks. If you don’t have the patience to fill out surveys, then there are tons of other ways to earn money with little effort. Complete surveys, watch videos, shop online and refer others to do the same to earn Swagbucks (which can be exchanged for gift cards).
There are so many ways to earn money with Swagbucks, that it doesn’t take much effort for you to make $100 a month. I usually turn my earnings into Amazon gift cards so I can buy groceries (and more books). You can also maximize your earnings by using their search engine or downloading their app.

Get Paid to Shop Online
I love to shop online. It’s easy and it saves me time, money, and the energy of dealing with less than enthusiastic cashiers. I also like to save, so it sometimes sucks if I can’t use coupons. While shopping online, I use Ebates , which is a great way to earn cash back from my purchases.
They have hundreds of retailers, including Amazon, that give cash back. I recently earned 6% back on a computer purchase I made, since my old one crashed and burned. If you install their extension, you’ll be notified when a cash back offer is available. All you have to do is activate your offer and wait for your “Big Fat Check” to arrive in the mail (you can also choose PayPal).
You can earn $10 just by signing up with my referral link to Ebates here.
Start a Blog
One of the best side hustles, in my honest opinion, is blogging. Starting a blog has opened up so many possibilities for me and has changed my life for the better. My only regret is that I should have started sooner.
Many think you can’t make money blogging, but that is simply not true. You won’t get rich overnight, but if you are consistent and build up a following, blogging can be very lucrative.
In fact, there are several bloggers out there who started blogging for fun and are now making thousands of dollars each month, such as these fashion bloggers who make millions.
Take Care of Other People’s Children
If you enjoy children and have the time to help out parents looking for a night out, you should consider providing child care services. Just make sure you have the energy and patience and plenty of activities to keep children entertained and busy.
You may be able to take care of children of any age and your rates will be determined by your geographic location (bigger cities and the suburbs can command more).
Check with your local laws to make sure of what, if any, certifications or licenses you may need. You don’t want to get in any trouble that can cost you money (or your freedom – YIKES). Even if it’s not required in your area, taking a first-aid and CPR class wouldn’t hurt.
Sell Stuff You No Longer Want
Ever heard of the saying, “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure”? Well, it’s true. Instead of renting storage space to house your record collection from the 1970s, how about selling them to someone with a renewed appreciation for them? As Americans, we tend to hang on too much junk, which in turn throws the rest of our lives out of whack.
Start off by looking around the house for items you no longer want or need and that are in good condition. Electronics, furniture, books and clothes sell pretty well. Poshmark and Letgo might be great places to start.
Correct Other People’s Mistakes
If you find yourself playing the Grammar Police on social media, you might find a good gig as a proofreader. See, even the best writers have an editor to look over their work to make sure it is free from mistakes.
Grammarly might help with spelling and punctuation, but sometimes a person with a great eye is needed before an article or book is published.

Having a great command of the English language and a great attention to detail is usually all you need to be a successful proofreader. Some niches pay better, but proofreaders can make a decent amount, especially if they are consistent and build up a good list of clients.
Write for Others
If you love to write, you can make money doing so for others. There are companies out there that need to produce a lot of content, but can’t do it on their own, which means good news for you.
You may be surprised to learn that even bloggers are willing to pay people to write articles for them. The possibilities are limitless and you can find freelancing opportunities, even if you’re not an established writer.
Others pay per article. Apply to write for companies such as BlogMutt, Textbroker or visit this extensive list of writing opportunities here. Your rate of pay may depend on the word count and the amount of research and preparation needed.
Make Stuff and Sell It
My friend Tiffany is a stay at home mom who makes money selling her beautifully sewn bags. She started on Etsy a little while ago and has done very well since then. She also sells her bags at craft shows and has turned her side gig into a small business.
Check out some of Tiffany’s Handmade by Faith designs here.
Write Down the Words of Others
If you have a good ear and can type fast, you may be great at making money as a transcriptionist. A transcriptionist is someone who takes what is being said and puts it on paper. A transcriptionist may transcribe audio from videos, interviews, or speeches to name a few.
Expect to earn around $15 to $25 an hour as a work-from-home transcriptionist.
Depending on your experience and education, you may qualify for opportunities which require you to have knowledge of that particular field (such as with court reporting or medical transcription).
Have you ever wondered how the television knows what the actors are saying when you use closed captioning? No, just me? Closed captioning helps those who are deaf and hard of hearing to enjoy the shows we love to watch. Well, apparently they hire people to watch videos and transcribe what people are saying.
If interested, you can apply to companies such as Aberdeen Captioning or Rev. Some require you to have experience or specialized training. Others do not. All want you to type really fast and perform at practically 100% accuracy.
Just so you know, I once applied to Rev, but didn’t pass their initial exam (even though I thought I did well).
Love to teach or have something to share with others? If so, teaching online is a great option. No matter what your passions or skills are, you undoubtedly know something more than someone else.
Before I started blogging, I took classes on how to set up a WordPress blog. Now, I’m able to teach a class on it with my hands tied behind my back.
I use Teachable for most of the classes I teach, but Udemy and Udacity are great options if you need an audience. These easy-to-use platforms make it easy for you to upload content and start teaching.
Run Errands for Others
If you have some extra time during the day, why not spend it running errands for people who are unable to get around such as the elderly? These people are not as mobile as they used to be and would be willing to pay for someone to go grocery shopping for them.
In addition to the elderly, busy people are great clients to vet for. After working a long day at work, who wants to stand in the long lines at the post office?
Join a Network Marketing Company
You or someone you know is either part of a network marketing or direct sales company. Or a the very least, a consumer of one.
Companies such as Avon, Beachbody, and Herbalife are well known, even though probably won’t see much advertising for them. Instead of paying for big ads, they use you to help spread the word about their products.
Network marketing is not easy and it sometimes gets a bad rep for being a pyramid scheme (though 99.9% percent of them are not). It is a great option for those looking to make additional money or start their own businesses with little risk and upfront cost.
I know a few six-figure earners in the industry and I, myself, earn hundreds of dollars each year with this company.
Get Paid to Tweet
If you’re on Twitter all day, you might as well get paid for it. If you have a large following, you are considered an influencer and companies are looking for you to help spread the word.
They would rather pay you hundred of dollars to tweet a link to your list than to waste millions hoping the right people see it.
Sign up for Sponsored Tweets by IZEA and apply for a campaign to share with your following. Some pay more than others and depending on your reach, you may not be eligible for some – but it’s worth signing up for.
Take Care of Other People’s Pets
Don’t want to take care of children? How about opening up your home to a pet for the day or night. Considering how many of us treat our pets like our children, it only makes sense that pet owners would prefer to keep their puppy in a warm and loving home while they’re away.
If you want to be a dog sitter, get signed up with Rover. I found the best sitter on there for my cockapoo and most sitters have gone through additional background screening (which comes with insurance, which helps to put your mind at ease).
Become a Virtual Assistant
Small business owners and bloggers in particular, often need additional help to run their businesses. Most don’t have the budget to hire someone as an employee and will look for someone for a few hours a week.
If you are very organized or have a skill, such as bookkeeping, social media management, or web design, look into becoming a virtual assistant.
Get your resume ready and look for opportunities on Monster, Beyond.com, CareerBuilder, or Zirtual Virtual Office Temps. Also just hang out online with bloggers and you might find someone looking for your help.
Drive People Around
Even if you don’t have a car, Uber has a program that helps you to get a car to drive – all credit levels considered. Sign up for Uber here.
Weekly payouts and the ability to set your own schedule, makes driving for these car sharing companies a great option.
