My Must Have Beauty Products

As someone who wholeheartedly embraces her girly side, I adore donning flowy dresses and believe firmly in the power of stepping out fully made up, with hair perfectly styled. Yet, I stand by the notion that maintaining this chic appearance shouldn’t drain one’s finances. After all, I consider myself a straightforward gal with a penchant for items that are not only delightful and stylish but also gentle on the wallet. Here are my go-to beauty products that keep me looking fabulous without compromising my budget.

Essential Beauty Products for a Flawless Face

Cleansing Routine

For my oily-combination skin, the Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash Scrub in Pink Grapefruit is a staple. I use this vibrant, invigorating scrub daily in the shower, although I dial it back during the colder months to avoid over-exfoliation.

For a gentler option, I rotate in the Michael Todd Charcoal Detox Deep Pore Gel Cleanser once or twice a week. Its unique black gel formula not only deeply cleanses but also leaves my skin visibly brightened and refreshed.

Toning Perfection

Post-cleansing, I apply the Michael Todd Organic Lemon Toner. Infused with the essence of lemon, it aims to lighten dark spots while refreshing my skin, preparing it for moisturization.

Moisturizing Must-Haves

The Olay Complete All Day Moisturizer with Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 15 for sensitive skin has been my go-to facial moisturizer for over seven years. Its lightweight formula is non-greasy, and the added SPF 15 helps protect my skin from daily sun exposure.

Flawless Foundation

The Sephora 10 HR Wear Perfection Foundation offers just the right amount of coverage to make my skin look professionally done. It’s long-lasting, and a little product goes a long way.

Another favorite is the Makeup Forever Pro Finish Multi-Use Powder Foundation. Versatile in its use, it can be applied solo for a quick fix or over liquid foundation for a more polished finish. It’s my secret weapon for both everyday wear and special occasions.

Lipstick Love

No girly girl’s makeup kit is complete without a pop of color from Mac Cosmetics. The lipsticks, especially shades like Diva and Ruby Woo, are perfect for making a statement. They offer a fantastic range of hues suitable for diverse skin tones and boast impressive staying power.

Other Makeup Essentials

For everyday eye makeup, I’m not too picky — any drugstore eyeliner or mascara on sale will do. I reserve eyeshadow for special occasions and admittedly still use favorites from BH Cosmetics that I’ve had for years.

Now, I’d love to hear from you! What are your budget-friendly beauty must-haves? How do you keep your makeup routine fabulous without splurging excessively? Share your secrets and let’s celebrate beauty in all its affordable glory!

10 Things I Can’t Live Without

As simple as I may be, I am that much more consistent. My daily schedule looks pretty the same.  There’s not much change going on over here. Unless I am introduced to something that changes my life in a spectacular way, I remain just as carefree and boring normal as ever. In today’s post, I decided to share 10 things I can’t live without.

After my family and friends, these items are integral parts of my life. In some weird way, these items keep me sane and less obsessive-compulsively. I’ll go over my morning schedule in another post as well as my beauty regimen (or lack thereof).

My Keurig 2.0

I’ve been a daily coffee drinker since my freshman year of college. There have been times when I thought about quitting, but the cravings and headaches prevented me from going more than two days without my fix.

Like most Keurig owners, this is my second machine. My first machine was the Keurig Vue, which had it’s limitations, such as hard to find Vue cups. I learned a hard lesson and decided that I would no longer purchase any of the Keurig machines that do not use the K-cups.

The Keurig 2.0 got a lot of backlash for not allowing consumers to use any other brand cups but theirs, which is a bummer if you want to use ground coffee. However, I got around this by purchasing this filter here. The Keurig prevents me from wasting a big pot of coffee when I only drink a cup at a time.

Diet Dr. Pepper

If you haven’t figured it out yet, I have an issue with caffeine (this doesn’t even include my nightly cup of green tea). So it should not surprise you that I drink sodas. Diet Dr. Pepper is, in fact, my favorite soda to drink. If I don’t have it, I am just not a happy camper.

I used to drink two and three sodas at a time, but now I’m down to only about 3 to 4 sodas a week. Even though it is diet, it is still a soda. It doesn’t have any calories, but it does contain Aspartame and I’m not at all convinced it’s completely safe. I got hooked on diet sodas over 20 years ago because that’s what my mother drank. I also figured if I was going to jug down a bunch of calories, I might as well eat them not drink them.

My iPhone 6

A few years ago I purchased my first iPhone, which was a 4S. Up until then, I had been a Blackberry girl. I didn’t want an iPhone and I didn’t want to hear anything about Apple.

My contract was up and it was time for me to pick out a new phone. I intended to walk into the Sprint store to purchase a newer Blackberry, but something happened. The sales person mentioned to me that they were giving away free iPhones and right at that moment I converted and have been an Apple lover ever since.

I do almost everything with my phone, such as record videos and listen to podcasts. I have a lot of apps on my phone, most of which I don’t use. The apps I use the most are Stitcher, iTunes, Facebook, Gmail, YouTube, Periscope and Pet Rescue (don’t judge).

I even read some of my Kindle books on my phone, even though the screen is a little small and at times like this I wish I purchased the iPhone 6 Plus. When I upgrade, I will definitely get the plus version of whatever phone is available.

I am currently on my third iPhone 6 and will tell you in a later post what happened to them all.

Melaleuca Oil

Melaleuca is an essential oil I use practically every day for the last few years. Melaleuca, also known as Tea Tree Oil, has antiseptic qualities that make it one of the best items to have in your medicine cabinet. I call it a miracle in a bottle. There are many uses for tea tree oil and you will be pressed to find any other product that does so much with so little.

You can purchase Melaleuca oil from the store or online through Amazon, however, I purchase mine through a shopping club I’m part of. I believe they offer essential oils of a higher quality than any you will find at the drug store.

I used to have dandruff that was so bad I hated wearing black shirts. Not only would it leave white traces everywhere there were also embarrassingly large flakes falling from my scalp. I tried almost every shampoo and right before I was scheduled to see a dermatologist, I began to use the Melaleuca oil. I would put a few drops in my shampoo and let it sit on my scalp for a minute or two longer.

Since then, I have not had a problem with dandruff and attribute it to the tea tree oil. I now use a shampoo that has tea tree oil in it. I also use the oil for foot baths, mouthwash and on funky skin rashes. The smell tends to be a little strong, but as long as you dilute it with water or a carrier oil, it’ll go away after awhile.

Amazon Prime Membership

I can’t remember the last time I purchased a book anywhere else but from Amazon. This is quite a shame because I actually miss walking through the aisles of my local bookstore. The combination of low prices and convenience of Kindle books, many of the bookstores I frequented closed their doors forcing me into the arms of Amazon.

I purchased an Amazon Prime membership for the main reason most people do and that was for the free 2-day shipping. At first, I thought it didn’t make sense to spend money for a membership but trust me when I say that it is 100% worth it. At the time of signing, I was in graduate school and purchased all of my textbooks through Amazon. The free shipping paid for itself for the cost of the membership.

Other benefits of Prime membership include monthly select free Kindle ebooks, unlimited streaming of TV shows and movies through Prime video and an invitation to member only events.

Kindle Fire

As an avid reader, my Kindle Fire stays as close to me as my iPhone. Most of my library consists of ebooks so my Kindle has become a necessary part of my life. Not only can I download ebooks, I’m also able to surf the internet, download apps and watch videos. I own an iPad and I can honestly say that if you don’t want to or can’t spend the money on an iPad, get a Kindle.

I read mostly nonfiction books, which can be downloaded and read in a short amount of time. An Amazon Prime membership allows you to lend out and borrow any books you or someone else have purchased. I have also signed up for their Kindle Unlimited, which is a godsend for me. It allows me to borrow up to 10 books at a time for about $10 a month.

My Fitbit

I am actually on my third fitness tracker, having lost the last one while picking up my son from the airport last year. The first two were FitBit Zips, but considering how easy it was for me to misplace them, I finally decided to get a Fitbit Flex. I’m looking at the Fitbit Charge HR, but at this moment it is more of a want than a need.

My Fitbit is solely used to track my steps each day. Yes, there are phone apps and less expensive pedometers that do the same thing, but I don’t walk everywhere with my phone. Since I’m in competition with myself, I need to track every single step I take.

I’ve noticed that without my Fitbit, I’m not as motivated to get in any fitness each day. Sitting on your butt all day is one thing. Having concrete evidence you sat on your butt all day is another. If it’s 11:45 PM and I haven’t reached my goals, you’ll find me walking around the house to get in those last few steps.

Tracking my steps keeps me accountable and helps me to get closer to my health and fitness goals. I also like how I can transfer my steps from my gym’s app to the Fitbit’s app and vice versa. There’s a record everywhere, which is helpful when tracking exercise for weight loss or training.

My Dog’s Thundershirt

Okay, this is not an item I use on me but trust me, it has made my life 10 times more peaceful. A Thundershirt is a shirt I put on my cockapoo during times of high stress and anxiety. My doggy is a little on the nervous side at times and his shaking scares the hell out of me. I purchased his Thundershirt about 5 years ago and it has worked wonders ever since.

I don’t know how it works, but I feel some sort of circular disks on the side of it. I don’t know if these are magnets or what. I try not to bother with the details as long as something works and isn’t harmful to my friend’s health. I put his shirt on him when I leave him for longer than I usually do and during thunderstorms.

Once a year, he get’s to wear it during the Fourth of July fireworks. My dad laughs at me when he sees my dog with his Thundershirt on, but I don’t care. My neighbor lost her dog during this time because she ran when startled by the fireworks going off in a nearby park. I refuse to let that happen to my dog.

Vitamins

I used to take like a zillion vitamins. After reading the benefits of different vitamins and minerals, I would mosey on down to the store and purchase my vitamins bottle by bottle.

Well, eventually it got too much for me and I just thought it would be best just to eat better to get the nutrients I can get through my diet and supplement the rest. I also alternate between the types of vitamins I take simply because your body just needs to certain ones at different times of your life.

Now I take the following vitamins everyday – Vitamin D (5000 iu), folic acid (800 mg) and a probiotic.

A few years ago, my doctor told me that I was deficient in Vitamin D and gave me a prescription. She stated that I could take Caltrate to maintain. Now I may reevaluate this since a new study has shown that the test that is used to measure vitamin d deficiency may not make sense for African Americans.

A Journal

My journal stays attached to my hip on a regular basis. I used to write my thoughts and feelings in my journal, but these days I’m jotting down notes, ideas for posts and anything that can help me to improve my business. I feel it is important to actually write things down, which most of us don’t do anymore because we’re always on our computers.

Anytime I can find a journal while out shopping, I always stop to pick one up. I’ve found my best journals from places such as Ross and TJ Maxx. The prettier the better. I think having something that looks nice encourages me to write in it.

I usually don’t do anything fancy with my journals but write in them. However, there are plenty of printables you can use to put in your pages or create your own journal as well.

If you don’t already keep a journal, I highly recommend getting one and writing in it. I recently found my mother’s journal she often wrote in and it gave me some insight into her mindset the months and days leading up to her death. You may find it to be cathartic or at the very least use it to help get those creative juices flowing.

There you have it, the top 10 things I can’t do without.

Fun and Cheap Date Night Ideas

Looking for a few fun and cheap date night ideas to enjoy with your sweetheart?

If so, I got you covered.

I believe spending quality time with the one you love is more about quality than quantity. Fostering your romantic relationships is important, but I don’t think you should go broke doing it.

cheap date night ideas

Dating is a wonderful way to bond with your partner, but let’s face it — it can get pretty expensive. A simple movie night could easily cost you $25 for just admission, and that’s without popcorn or drinks. But don’t worry — there are plenty of creative and budget-friendly ways to enjoy time with your loved one without sacrificing the romance. Whether you’re saving for that dream vacation or working on paying down debt, you can still make date night special without spending a fortune.

I believe that romance isn’t defined by extravagant spending or elaborate settings. The most memorable moments often happen when you’re just enjoying each other’s company, no matter where you are. Yes, a cruise to the Caribbean or Broadway tickets are thrilling, but no one should have to go broke just for a single evening out. That’s why I’ve compiled a list of free or practically free ideas for your next date.

So, whether you’re flat-out broke, trying to keep things low-cost for a no-spend weekend, or saving for the future, these fun and cheap date night ideas will help you keep the spark alive without burning a hole in your wallet.

1. Go on a Picnic

Picnics never go out of style. They offer a sweet and intimate setting, and the best part? They’re budget-friendly! All you need is a picnic basket (or just a tote bag) packed with some sandwiches, snacks, and maybe your favorite bottle of wine. Head to a nearby park, lake, or even your backyard for a cozy, outdoor meal.

Make it extra special by adding some personal touches. Bring a soft blanket, and if you’re feeling fancy, swap out plastic cups for real wine glasses. Chocolate-covered strawberries, a simple cheese board, or your favorite desserts can elevate the experience. A picnic allows for deep conversations, fresh air, and a beautiful escape from everyday life — all without spending a lot.

2. Netflix and Chill — But Make it Special

Sure, “Netflix and Chill” has become a cliché, but it’s still a great option for an affordable and relaxing date night. The key to making it feel special is in the details. Snuggle up on the couch with some comfy blankets, dim the lights, and pick a movie you’ve both been wanting to watch. Skip the crowded theaters and have your own movie marathon at home, complete with homemade popcorn and your favorite snacks.

You can even create a themed movie night — whether it’s a classic rom-com marathon or binge-watching the latest true crime documentary series. The beauty of watching from home is the freedom to talk during the movie, pause for bathroom breaks, or even order in some takeout for an extra indulgence.

Movie Suggestions:

  • Something New
  • Breakfast at Tiffany’s
  • 50 First Dates
  • Silver Linings Playbook

3. Attend a Concert in the Park

There’s something magical about live music under the stars, and the good news is that many cities offer free outdoor concerts, especially during the warmer months. These events are often organized by local parks, city governments, or cultural organizations, making them a cost-effective way to enjoy an evening out.

Bring a blanket or lawn chairs, and pack a small picnic for added charm. You’ll get to enjoy live music, dance with your partner, and experience your city in a new way — all without spending a dime. Be sure to check the event calendar of your local parks department for upcoming concerts.

4. Get Active Together: Workout Date

Who says dates have to be all about sitting at a table or a movie theater? Why not work out together? Whether it’s a brisk walk, a bike ride, or a fun outdoor workout session, exercising as a couple can be both healthy and romantic. Not only do you get to spend quality time together, but you also get to burn some calories in the process.

For an extra adventure, try a hike at a nearby nature trail, or if you’re both into yoga, consider joining an outdoor yoga class together. Exercise dates help you connect while staying active, which can be a refreshing change of pace from traditional dinners.

Other Workout Ideas:

  • Take a dance class together (try salsa or ballroom)
  • Go for a jog in a scenic park
  • Sign up for a virtual fitness class

5. Explore a New Museum

Museums are a great way to learn something new and spark interesting conversations with your partner. Many museums offer free admission or have discounted rates during certain hours. Spend the afternoon exploring exhibits that interest you both — whether it’s art, history, or science.

Don’t live near a major museum? Check out smaller, local institutions that showcase regional history or local artists. A museum date offers a chance to explore new perspectives while enjoying quiet, quality time together.

Pro Tip:
If your local museums charge for entry, check for special events or free admission days. Many cities also offer City Passes that provide discounted entry to multiple attractions.

6. Host a Potluck Dinner with Friends

Date night doesn’t have to be just the two of you — sometimes it’s fun to invite friends and make it a group event. Hosting a potluck dinner is an affordable way to gather friends without the stress of covering all the food costs. Everyone can bring a dish and a drink to share, which cuts down on expenses and allows for a variety of dishes.

Make it a themed dinner (Mexican night, pasta night, or BBQ) to add an element of fun. Cooking together as a couple before guests arrive is also a great bonding experience and sets the tone for the evening.

7. Game Night with a Twist

Bring out your competitive side with a couples’ game night! Whether it’s classic board games like Monopoly or a lively card game like UNO, playing games is a fun and affordable way to connect and laugh together. If you prefer something digital, there are tons of multiplayer video games that are perfect for couples.

For added fun, invite another couple over for a game night double date. Set up some snacks, put on some upbeat music, and let the games begin!

8. Mini Road Trip Adventure

If you’re both itching for adventure, consider taking a mini road trip for your next date. You don’t have to go far — just pick a destination that’s a couple of hours away and enjoy the journey. Whether you’re exploring a nearby town, visiting a new beach, or hiking in a state park, road trips offer a sense of freedom and discovery.

Before you go, pack some snacks, create a fun playlist, and make sure you have a camera ready to capture the memories. The beauty of a mini road trip is that it feels like an escape from daily life, even if it’s just for the day.

Road Trip Ideas:

  • Visit a local farmer’s market
  • Explore a nearby small town or historical site
  • Find a scenic drive and stop for photos along the way

9. Pay for Dates with Free Gift Cards

What’s better than a budget-friendly date? An entirely free date! Sign up for reward programs like Swagbucksor Dosh, which allow you to earn free gift cards by completing small activities like watching videos, taking surveys, or shopping online. You can use the gift cards you earn to cover the cost of future date nights, whether it’s for dinner, a movie, or a fun activity.

It takes a bit of time to accumulate enough points, but if you’re consistent, you can enjoy date nights without spending your own money.

10. Create a DIY Spa Night

After a long week, sometimes the best way to spend date night is by relaxing and unwinding together. Set up a DIY spa at home — light some candles, play soothing music, and prepare a few spa treatments like face masks, body scrubs, or foot baths. You don’t need to spend money on expensive spa treatments when you can recreate the experience in the comfort of your home.

Take turns giving each other massages, enjoy a bubble bath, or sip herbal tea while you relax. A DIY spa night not only helps you save money but also provides intimate, quality time to reconnect.

Conclusion

You don’t have to spend a fortune to keep the romance alive. Whether you’re looking to save money or just trying to be more mindful of your spending, there are plenty of fun, creative, and affordable date night ideas to explore.

From picnics and game nights to mini road trips and museum visits, these budget-friendly activities are proof that romance doesn’t require a big wallet — just a little imagination.

So, next time you’re planning a date night, consider one of these affordable ideas and enjoy creating memories without the financial stress.

28+ Cheap or Free Things to Do This Summer

Summer is the time of the year where I make an effort to be out and about, simply because my brain is wired to believe that summer + me = fun.

I am always looking for cheap or free things to do this summer since I believe in my heart that everyone should enjoy the beautiful weather, no matter their finances.

So what you’re not going to Walt Disney World or on a 5-day cruise to somewhere exotic?

You can have a mini staycation and still have fun. Here are a few ways to enjoy the summer without breaking the bank.

budget friendly summer activities

Working from home means I’m location-independent, so I can pretty much go wherever I want without restrictions.

Unfortunately, my boyfriend, family, and friends don’t have that luxury. They have 9 to 5s that they have to put in vacation time for.

That’s too bad I hate to travel solo because I would leave them behind to roam the world.

Well, that and the fact that it’s very expensive to travel for months on end.

There are many inexpensive activities and events to participate in during the summer, you just have to do a little research to find them.

Ebates Coupons and Cash Back

I’m blessed to live so close to our nation’s capital, which is often brewing with fun, interesting and free things to do.

This doesn’t mean, however, that if you don’t live in a metropolitan area that you can’t have fun for cheap, you just have to look around for them.

Below are some of the ways I like to enjoy the summer without breaking the bank.

My child is grown, so I use these for cheap date nights or hanging out with friends. However, most if not all, are kid friendly or can be adapted for families.

Free and Cheap Places to Visit

Museums

If you are looking for something cheap and educational to do, visiting a museum should be at the top of your list. Most museums are free or have low admission fees.

No matter where you live, I’m sure you can find a museum that caters to your interests. The Smithsonian has 19 museums in Washington, DC and New York City. Thankfully for me, most of these museums are in DC or the metro area, including the National Zoo.

My other favorites are the National Air and Space Museum for their IMAX movies and the National Zoo. I missed visiting the Great Apes and Primates exhibit during my last visit. For some odd reason, this exhibit is indoors and I almost passed out from the smell.

This time, I’m planning my visit right around the time of clean up.

Side note: If the museums in your area charge admission, check to see if they have any free museum days and plan to go then.

National Parks

If you love to be one with nature or otherwise appreciate the natural beauty that our landscape offers, then visiting a national park in your area is a must-to-do.

The National Park Service works to maintain our natural and cultural resources for us to enjoy. You can hike, picnic and camp at parks such as the Shenandoah in Virginia and the Yosemite in California.

Or visit San Juan National Historical Site in Puerto Rico or Edgar Allan Poe’s house in Pennsylvania. There are literally thousands of places to visit, so support your national parks.

Admission varies among locations. Some are free, whereas others charge a minimal fee for admission.

If the park you’re interested in visiting has a cost associated with it, you may consider purchasing a pass that allows admission to over 2,000 national parks. This is great if you plan to visit multiple times and/or multiple parks. A few visits make the price worth it.

Don’t want to pay?

You can also visit for free during their Free Entrance Days, which are held several times a year.

Concerts in the Park

I love live music and would go to more concerts if the ticket prices weren’t so darn expensive.

Paying $75 + a ticket gets old real fast. The next best thing in my mind is going to a concert in the park that is usually hosted by local municipalities.

These concerts may not showcase Beyonce’, but are often free and can introduce you to some really good talent.

Last year I went to a jazz concert where it seemed I was the only one not familiar with the bands on the stage, which meant I needed to get out more often.

Again, check your local area since many cities tend to have summer concert series. Delaware State Park, Sacramento, and Chicago all offer events this summer.

Just bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the music.

Movies in the Park

Similar to the concerts in the park, movies in the park are as close as some of us will get to the experience of a drive-in movie (though there are still a few around).

Eating popcorn and watching a movie under the stars is an ambiance you will not soon forget. I’m excited this year that I have a wide range of movies to choose from in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area.

These events are usually free and depending on the movie can be fun for the whole family. Don’t expect the same movie lineup that’s at your local theater, as most of these movies or older ones you can probably find on Netflix or at Redbox.

That’s not the point.

It’s more fun to watch a movie on your blanket or chair around other people having a great time. I mean, who can resist seeing Ferris Bueller’s Day Off for the 80th time?

Not me.

How I Make Money Outside of Blogging

If you haven’t already, go ahead and read my post on How I Make Money Blogging. Considering I haven’t made much money with this blog (yet), I know you were wondering how I managed to eat. My survival currently depends on a few thing such as keeping expenses low and hustling like a mutha. Side hustles are my thing, but to put them in perspective I wanted to share with you how I make money outside of blogging.

Here Are the Ways I Make Money Outside of Blogging

I’ve been an advocate of multiple streams of income for years. When I was a teacher, I always looked for ways to supplement my income because your girl here really liked to shop. So, I thought I would publish this post showing you guys some of the ways I make money that does not involve blogging. This is something I considered doing when I start posting monthly income reports. Until then, I don’t think it would hurt to give a glimpse of how I bring in income to pay bills and eat (since many people were concerned I was missing a few meals – not).

Here are a few of the ways I make money outside of blogging.

Business Coaching

I mentioned coaching in my post How I Make Money Blogging, but I included it on this list because I do work with entrepreneurs who do not run online businesses. I mostly help them to set up their business as well as gain clarity about running an online and “traditional” business. I am not a graphic designer, but I have a basic knowledge of computers and offer a WordPress set-up service for those who don’t.

Direct Sales and Network Marketing

I’ve participated in direct sales and network marketing for over 20 years. My mom and aunts always bought from Avon and when I was 18, I signed up to become a representative. Though I didn’t remain with Avon long (I bought more than I sold), I continued to bounce from company to company as either an independent business owner or a customer.

I’m not a great sales person, but if there is a product or service I believe in, I don’t mind telling my family and friends about it. Having said that, I am currently an independent business owner for two companies Total Life Changes and Melaleuca. Having lost my mom to cancer over a year ago, I believe in doing what you can to live a healthier and cleaner lifestyle. I’ll write a post later about each company and my participation in each.

I hope to increase my participation in both companies, especially since I believe you’ll get out what you put into them. Direct sales and network marketing have gotten a bad rep over the years, but the industry speaks for itself. Pyramid schemes do exist, but because of laws and regulations, the companies that participate in that behavior don’t stay around long. There are reputable companies out there and many people are making money from these companies. According to the Direct Selling Association which regulates the industry, there are over 20 million people involved in some form or fashion, most likely as a consumer. I just recommend that people do their due diligence when selecting a company and stand behind products and services that they really enjoy.

Writing

I’m not a great writer by any means, but I love to write. I write not only for my blogs, but I also write and publish books on Amazon. The course K Money Mastery helped me with my Kindle publishing strategy. One of my books, How to Make Money Planning and Hosting Cabarets is published on Amazon and is part of their Direct Kindle Publishing program. Participation prohibits the book being available for sale on other platforms.

I’m in the process of writing an ebook for this blog and when I’m finished I will be sure to let you know. I am currently in the process of writing an ebook that I may sell on this blog. Amazon is great for the exposure, but there’s a cap on what most people expect to purchase an ebook for when on Amazon.

Online Surveys

I have to admit that I don’t make a lot of money filling out surveys. Most of it has to do with the fact that I’m not really consistent in completing them. However, I do earn money or gift cards by participating in online reward programs, which most of them offer surveys you can complete to earn points that can be redeemed for cash, gift cards and more points. Most of them also offer referral programs you can credit for sharing your link with family and friends. Click here to see which online rewards I participate in.

Selling on Craigslist and Amazon

Whenever I get low on cash or otherwise have junk I have no clue what to do with, I’ll post on Amazon or Craigslist. Now my junk may surely be someone else’s treasure, so I use the term lightly. Some items I have sold either on Amazon or Craigslist are an old Kindle, an IPad, exercise DVDs (which I probably should have kept) and many textbooks. Depending on how fast I needed the money or how much I could get for the item depended on which platform I would sell it on.

I would probably make a good side income with selling items in my home I no longer need, but I haven’t put that much effort into it. Most of it has to do with the fact that I no longer binge shop like I used to, so I have less clutter and junk just lying around. Most of what I have now is what I use and can’t seem to part with.

Affiliate Marketing

As I’ve mentioned before, I love affiliate marketing. I became involved in affiliate marketing ever since I learned what it was and decided this was how I was going to make money online. I mention affiliate marketing on this list because before I started blogging, I created and published niche sites. These websites were four or more pages surrounding one product. You may have noticed these types of sites as either product reviews and comparisons. You probably landed on a page after putting into the search bar “Which is the best diet pill to lose weight” or “iPhone vs Android” and noticed that the author gave the pros and cons and included links to purchase these products. These are affiliate links!

As bloggers we include affiliate links within our blog posts, however, these niche sites had no other purpose than to educate you on a product or service with the hope you will buy them. The purpose is not to build relationships with their readers because they don’t want you to leave with hopes of coming back, they want you to buy right then and right there.

I’ve had niche sites on diet pills, skin-lightening creams, diabetes diet plans as well as a supplement that lowers cholesterol. I don’t focus on these sites as much because they’re pretty much hands-off. I used to have about 10 niche sites, but since then I have let go of the ones that were not performing.

My goal was to create one new niche site each month, but this has had to take a back burner because I’m now laser-focused on this blog and my relationship/dating blog. You can read how I make money blogging.

How I Make Money Blogging

If you’re like me, you dread the question “What do you do?” When I was in the classroom, it was easy to say that I was an educator, an elementary school teacher… Most people understood what I meant and didn’t need clarification.

Now when someone asks me what I do, I tell them I’m a blogger. The confused looks on their faces are priceless. The next question some of the brave ones ask is how do you make money blogging?

If you’re interested in starting your own blog, Hostgator is a great hosting provider. Get up to 70% off your next website.

This is a good question because two years ago I didn’t understand how someone could make money blogging. When bloggers claimed to make thousands of dollars a month, I just assumed they were either lying or selling a lot of ads.

I noticed Google Ads everywhere on many blogs, so this had to be the way most bloggers earned their money. Right?

Then I stumbled upon Pat Flynn’s website Smart Passive Income and read his monthly income reports. I was amazed and was motivated to continue on with blogging because I had concrete evidence it was possible to make money with a blog.

It was also obvious I didn’t have a clue what I was doing since I hadn’t made a dime from my blog at the time.

Most bloggers don’t make half of what Pat Flynn makes, but there are many making full-time incomes from their blogs.

I found income reports from Michelle Schroeder-Gardner (Making Sense of Cents) and Abby Lawson (Just a Girl and Her Blog) very eye opening- to say the least.

These reports inspired me to keep going, even when I wanted to give this whole blogging thing up.

How I Make Money Blogging

If you think that you can put up a blog and make money the next day, you will be sadly mistaken.

Blogging is hard work. It will take time, patience and ingenuity to start making any money.

There are bloggers who are making tens of thousands of dollars a month whereas most aren’t even making enough to pay for their hosting costs.

There are many ways to make money blogging. Of all the ways there are out there to make a living from blogging, many bloggers only use a few of them.

I believe in order to make substantial money, you’re going to have to diversify your income streams. I take that position and I’ve listed the ways I personally make money blogging.

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is, in fact, my largest income stream from blogging. I highly recommend any blogger, new or old, to include affiliate marketing as an income stream while blogging.

Affiliate marketing involves recommending products and services that you absolutely love and have used to your followers. If someone clicks on a link and purchases something based on your recommendation, you’ll receive a percentage of the sale.

Now to be totally transparent, I dabbled in affiliate marketing before I started blogging.

It has only been within the last year that I have transitioned from internet marketer to blogger. I’ll speak more about that in a later post, but my focus is more on educating and less on selling.

You can use affiliate marketing while you’re creating your own products. Though there’s a strategy to being successful with affiliate marketing, it’s one of, if not the easiest income stream you can have.

Michelle makes over $50,000 a month from her blog, primarily from affiliate marketing. If you’re looking to up your affiliate marketing game, check out her course Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing.

I only believe in recommending products I use or have used and it’s no surprise that my biggest affiliates include Amazon Affiliates, Bluehost, Genesis Framework and more recently blogging books. These tools have been monumental in my blogging journey.

Display Advertising

Your blog’s traffic can bring you income with display advertising. By putting ads on your blog, you will make money based on impressions (how many eyeballs that come across your ad) or clicks. Google Adsense is the biggest network out there, but not the only one.

Now I admit, I’m like everyone else who vomited Google Ads all over their blogs. On every blog I run, I placed Google ads throughout them. Of course, I found out much later that Google frowns upon having more than two ads on every page.

I don’t make much money from Google Ads because you will, in fact, need a lot of traffic in order to make money from it. I don’t make a lot of money from Adsense, but thought I would mention it in case my income increases later on.

I recommend using Google Adsense if you have a lot of traffic or blog posts that can’t be easily monetized in other ways. If you’re looking for an alternative to Google Adsense you may want to consider Media.net, Chitika or Bidvertiser.

Selling Ebooks and E-courses

I haven’t produced a lot of my own products, simply because I haven’t really had the time to do so. I’ve created an ebook How to Make Money Planning Cabaret Parties which is currently listed on Amazon and two e-courses Jump Start Your Online Biz and Blog Your Way to 3k.

These courses are only available twice a year, but I’m working on making both of these courses evergreen programs.

I like the idea of creating my own products, especially e-books, because once you’re done – you’re done.

You can keep selling the same product over and over again without any more effort on your part. You literally can make money while you sleep.

Coaching

I coach women entrepreneurs who are looking to build and grow online businesses. I’ve included coaching on this list because I use blogging to advertise and support my clients.  I blog and sell coaching services over at Bossy in Heels.

I am in the process of cutting down on the number of clients I take because working one-on-one is time-consuming. There’s only so many clients you can work with on a daily basis, therefore minimizing the amount you are able to make.

A Great Way to Save Money on Groceries Each Month

If you’re looking for a great way to save money on groceries each month, check out a new app called Ibotta.

With the Ibotta app you can turn your groceries receipts into cash.

Cha-ching!

Related

I came across Ibotta from watching a YouTube video.

I had never heard of it before and I thought it was too good to be true.

You know, like how some of those other websites take 6 months for you to earn enough money to cash out?

Who wants to wait that long to earn $35? Not me, so Ibotta became one of my favorite apps to use.

Not me, so Ibotta became one of my favorite apps to use.

Besides, you were going shopping anyway, so why not earn some money while doing it?

What is Ibotta?

Ibotta is an app that you use to earn cash back from purchases you’ve made from participating offers at your neighborhood stores.

The great part about it is that you don’t even need to have the app with you while you’re shopping and you can double your purchases with store and manufacturer coupons!

Talk about extra savings.

Though you could probably save the most at grocery stores, there are plenty of offers from other retailers. You can get cash back on your pharmacy, clothing, and dining purchases.

Offers vary depending on the participating stores and restaurants in your area. Check them out frequently, because most offers have expiration dates and participating retailers change often.

Today I just unlocked a $5 rebate from Ruby Tuesday’s off of a $15 purchase, which wasn’t there a month ago.

How to Get Started with Ibotta

First, download the app onto your phone. The Ibotta app is available on IOS and Android devices and even though they have a website, you’ll need the app to verify purchases.

After you download the app to your phone, search for items to purchase. There are rebates from grocery stores as well as drug and department stores. My favorites are definitely Target and Walmart.

Next, once you’ve found products you wanted to purchase you can unlock your rebates.

Sometimes you may have to watch a short video clip or answer a question to unlock the rebates, but this extra step doesn’t take too much time and isn’t too intrusive.

Now it’s time to go shopping and purchase the items of the offers you unlocked.

When you get home, scan the barcodes of the items you purchased and submit a photo of your receipt.

If you have linked a loyalty card up to your Ibotta account, it is done automatically for you.

Wait for your purchases to be confirmed (usually within 24 – 48 hours) and watch your rebates as they are credited to your account.

You can redeem these rebates for cash onto your PayPal or Venmo accounts or redeem them for gift cards from retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, Starbucks, and Sephora.

The minimum payout seems to be about $20, which you can reach fairly quickly if you make an effort to open the app before going out to shop.

What I Like About Ibotta (besides the money of course)

Not only is this app easy to use, but many of the items are not store or brand specific and can be redeemed at multiple stores.

For example, I’ve made purchases of bananas and bread and it didn’t matter where I purchased them or which brand.

I love being able to use coupons, which helps me to save even more money. It makes earning money with Ibotta that much worthwhile.

It makes earning money with Ibotta that much worthwhile.

In the above receipt, not only did I earn 25 cents off of eggs, there was a coupon attached to the carton for $1.00 off as well.

Sometimes I have been to a store and purchased items I did not originally unlock.

I found that I was still able to unlock these purchases and get cash back for them. This should work for you too, as long as you unlock them before the expiration date.

One caveat, however, I noticed this didn’t work well with purchases from stores with linked loyalty cards.

So if you find yourself purchasing an item that has a rebate, try to unlock the item before going to the register.

5 Must-Read Books for New Bloggers

Now I’m not going to tell you that blogging is a quick path to riches because it’s not. Harsh reality is that most blogs fail. Most get less than 1,000 visitors a month and some never, ever make a single penny. Yes, blogging may be a passion, but there are costs associated and doing it for the fun of it get’s old real fast.

I believe that most bloggers can maximize their earnings in a shorter amount of time if they educate themselves in the beginning on how to start and run a successful and profitable blog. Education can be received through e-books, which is why I’m recommending 5 must-read blogging books to get you started.

If you’re interested in starting your own blog, Hostgator is a great hosting provider. Get up to 70% off your next website.

Many seasoned bloggers will tell you that it took them several years to make any money from their blogs. When you start to peel back the cover to their not-so-overnight success, you’ll find that most of these bloggers admit that they only started making money once they took their blog seriously and treated it like a business.

Just imagine if these bloggers put together a business plan and a marketing strategy BEFORE they even put up their first post. I bet that some of them would have made money sooner-rather-than-later.

*This post contain affiliate links. Please read my disclosure policy here.*

Most newbie bloggers will throw up Google ads and hope for a miracle, only to be disappointed when at the end of the month they noticed they only made $10 (a real bummer when the payout threshold is $100).

I did the same thing and was frustrated when I couldn’t make any money, even when I spent a lot of time posting great content and sharing my posts on social media.

Below I have listed 5 books I highly recommend for newbie bloggers who are trying to turn a profit from their blog. These books are written by women who walk the talk and are making serious money.

Must-Read Blogging Books I Recommend for Newbies

How to Blog for Profit Without Selling Your Soul by Ruth Soukup

Most bloggers have heard of How to Blog for Profit Without Selling Your Soul and for good reason, too. I consider it to be the Holy Grail when it comes to blogging as a business. For me, it was one of the first books I read that gave me the idea that I could actually make money from blogging.

I mean real money, not just grocery or going out money, but money that could pay my mortgage and replace my teacher’s salary. Ruth Soukup blogs over at Living Well Spending Less and has created not only this book but an entire academy on blogging as a business.

In Blog for Proft, Ruth not only gives you case studies of bloggers making money from their blogs, but also the different ways you can bring in some income.

This book explains how important it is to diversify your income and help you to consider which ones are best for your blog and brand.

How to Blog for Profit is available on Amazon. I purchased the Kindle version first but soon wanted to have my own copy to hold. I refer to this book often and having a personal copy made it much easier for me to highlight and refer to later.

If you are considering starting a blog or interested in making money from a current one, this is the book to start with.

The Power of Visual Storytelling by Ekaterina Walter

The Power of Visual Storytelling is not a blogging book per se, but if you are selling products and services online – you need this book. Listen to me when I tell you, – you need this book.

I first became aware of this book after listening to one of my favorite Periscopers. She mentioned this book as one of the must-have books for business owners. I think it is especially great for content providers such as bloggers.

I purchased my book from Amazon and was pleasantly pleased when the book arrived. This book includes a lot of practical advice on how to become present in an online space and how to leverage not only the content you produce and share with others but also through your social media platforms. The author actually goes through each platform and explains the best times to post as well as the best content to share on each specifically.

The author discusses how the world is becoming more visual. In order to be heard, you must put a strategy together that presents your messaged in a visual format. She discusses how powerful visual storytelling is and the importance of creating content that reflects this. In blogging especially, why images are important, as well as how social media platforms such as Pinterest and Instagram have exploded.

Blogging on the Side Where Passion and Profit Meet by Becky Mansfield & Paula Rollo

I wish I could tell you how I stumbled upon Becky & Paula’s blog, but I can’t. Maybe I came across from a pin from Pinterest or via a Google search. It doesn’t matter how I found them, I am just thankful that I did.

Becky and Paula both run separate blogs. I would call them mommy bloggers since they tend to blog quite a bit about parenting and family.

In addition to their personal blogs, they run Becky & Paula where they discuss in detail how to start and run a successful and profitable blog. Each found that they were receiving a lot of blogging questions from readers. So much so, they decided to dedicate this blog to helping people build their blogs.

Each alternating chapter in this book is written by the other, which is awesome because it get’s both of their perspectives on making money blogging. Both ladies share what worked for them and what didn’t. They provide practical advice that you can apply immediately to your own blog.

While reading this book, I have made several changes to help optimize my blog, including changing the sizes of my images and the design of my blog.

Blogging on the Side gives tips on how to have a work-life balance as well as give tips on how to make money with the blog. Becky & Paula make a good amount from e-books they have created and includes tips on how to create your own.

*After you purchase Blogging on the Side, you’ll get a discount code of $5 to use towards any of their other e-books, which I’m sure you’ll want to use.

Building a Framework: The Ultimate Blogging Handbook by Abby Lawson

Building a Framework: The Ultimate Blogging Handbook | JustAGirlandHerBlog.com

Upon finding Abby’s blog, A Girl and Her Blog, I have always wanted to purchase her e-book, Building a Framework: The Ultimate Blogging Handbook.

I knew that if I really wanted to get serious about blogging as a business, I needed her book. It took me a couple of months before I actually purchased it because I didn’t know if this would help me more than any other blogging book I have picked up.

I mean what more could I learn from blogging that I didn’t already know?

Apparently a lot.

Building a Framework is one of those e-books that should be on the list of required reading for bloggers if they were giving degrees out for blogging. It’s really that good. Abby takes the reader step-by-step through her process of a blog to business as well as the mistakes she has made along the way.

She includes basic information such as building your blog, but also includes the different ways to make money blogging. In addition, she includes social media and how to leverage it to gain more followers as well as working with brands.

In my opinion, she spends a little too much time in the beginning, going over how to create a blog. However, it could be great for someone who has never built a blog before. If you’re like me, you could just skip over this part and start where you’re at. I do like how she shows her actual marketing strategy on social media.

Though you can’t expect to duplicate her results, it sure helps to get insight into how she turned her blog into a success.

Affiliate Marketing for Bloggers by Tasha Agruso

affiliate marketing for bloggers

Affiliate Marketing is one of the main ways I have ever monetize my blogs. In the past, I would create blogs and just slap affiliate links throughout the post. Needless to say, this didn’t work that well. In fact, there were times I didn’t make one dime.

I even paid for a course that showed me how to create a niche site around a product using affiliate links. Trust me, the way the course showed me how to make money with affiliate marketing didn’t work.

In the beginning, I just slapped Google Ads all over my blog. Once I realized Google Adsense wasn’t working for me, I figured it had to do with the number of page views my blog received. Truth be told, there’s no direct correlation between the number of page views and money earned. Great news, because it proves it is possible to make a significant amount of money as a small blog.

Affiliate Marketing for Bloggers showed me that affiliate marketing is a great way to make money, even if you’re a small blog. If you’re strategic, upfront and honest about the products and services you recommend to your readers, you’ll do pretty well. My affiliate marketing strategy didn’t work in the past because according to this book, no one is going to buy from you if you’re just throwing links all over the place.

Her part on deep linking was very informative because until I read her book, I never understood how important it was and became a game changer for my blog.

Tasha runs the blog Designer Trapped (in a Lawyer’s Body) and earns a nice living from affiliate marketing. This strategy works well for her since she often recommends products she used in her DIY projects. At the time she printed her book, she was earning over $1500 per month in affiliate sales.

Actions People Take That Keep Them Broke

Just like the late, great Notorious B.I.G., I believe that the saying “mo’ money, mo’ problems” holds true – especially if you don’t know how to handle your money right.

I know first hand the actions people take that keep them broke and how they can put themselves in the poor house.

Yes, making more money could be the end to some of your financial woes, but keeping more of it does as well. I’ve seen people raise a family of four off of $35,000 a year, whereas some single people live paycheck to paycheck on $80,000.

Exaggeration?

Nope. Some of us save more while others spend every dime they have.

My Broke Actions

My first school was a Catholic School which didn’t have the attendance to keep it open. My second one, another Catholic school, ended up converting to a charter school because of – you guessed it – financial reasons.

I hated change, but the pay increases kept me satisfied for a little bit. Looking back now, I don’t know if I was grossly underpaid or if I just happened to find employment at more financially sound schools.

As much as anyone would have been happy with the pay increases, can you believe my financial situation didn’t change much? Yes, I was fortunate to buy my first home, but I purchased it when I was only making $42,000, and my expenses didn’t increase that much either.

What did change, however, was my spending habits.

My Salary During a 3-Year Time Frame

  • 2007 – $42,000
  • 2008 – $56,586
  • 2009 – $62,626

The more I made, the more I spent.

As much as my pay increases should have helped me, they only put me further and further into debt. I couldn’t understand why I was still broke.

Now, I’m not going to tell you raises are bad because they’re not. Money won’t make you happy, but having enough of it will help to alleviate some of the stress so you can have enough to take care of life’s necessities.

Listen to me when I say this if you don’t get a grasp on your financial situation – no matter how much money you make – you’re going to be broke.

So why did I continue to struggle to pay my bills after having an extra $20,000 hit my bank account? The only thing I can say with all honesty is that my mindset was out of whack.

The more I made, the more I spent. I didn’t just have more money to pay bills, I had more money to buy that cute pair of shoes I wanted.

I had more money to go out with friends. I had more money to put my son in all the activities he wanted to be in. I probably spent too much time at Christmas Tree Shops and Home Goods.

I bet you’re wondering why I did it.

According to one of my favorite books in the world, Rich Dad Poor Dad , the poor think and act differently than the rich. Now I’m not thinking of how the rich vacation on yachts in the Riviera, but more in terms of how they think, feel and behave with money.

The actions people take will make the difference between living paycheck to paycheck and leaving a legacy for future generations.

There were a lot of mistakes I made in my 20s and 30s, but I blame them on actions and mindset. I read books and listened to Dave Ramsey. I tried to follow his Financial Peace University, which worked but only when I put in the effort.

Before I was able to change my actions and keep more of the money I made, I compared what I did to my wealthier family and friends.

The problem with that is that no one knows what goes on in other people’s wallets. Just because someone is wearing a Louis Vuitton handbag, doesn’t mean they have any money in it.

So…to help you to become more financially savvy based on what I’ve experienced and read, I listed the actions people take that keep them broke and how you can get your money right.

Broke Action #1 – Hanging with Negative Nancy and Broke Joe

Some of what I say might hurt your feelings, but that’s okay. I do all of it out of love. I want everyone to live a life of abundance, but in order to do so, you have to see what you’re doing in your own life that might keep you in the poor house.

Ever heard of the saying, “Two birds of a feather, flock together”? Well, it’s true, especially when it comes to money. If you hang around three broke people, you will ultimately become the fourth.

Misery loves company, and if you surround yourself with individuals who only breed negativity, then they will suck out your hopes and dreams like a vacuum cleaner and prevent you from reaching yours.

I used to hang out with a group that was always broke. Whenever I wanted to go out to eat, they would tell me they had to wait until payday. They would then complain that they didn’t make enough money. Soon I found myself complaining and sitting at home waiting for payday just like them.

Not only were they always broke, but they also spent their paychecks on clothes, hair, nails, anything besides bills. They would literally get two and three payments behind and stress over impending disconnection notices.

I had to get out of that group – FAST. Once I started hanging out with friends who not only made more money but had an overall better relationship with money, did my mindset around money change as well.

I stopped living paycheck to paycheck because my new group took care of their financial obligations first and didn’t feel the need to spend every dime they earned.

Wealthy Action to take today: Surround yourself with people who are positive thinkers and have a wealth mentality. These people do not need to be millionaires, but they should be at the very least a step-up from your current situation.

People with wealthy mindsets will hold you accountable and you can learn from their actions and beliefs.

Broke Action #2 – Spending Money to Appear Rich

We spend most of our time buying things we can’t afford to impress people we don’t even like. We need to have a bigger house than our friends and a faster car than our neighbors.

Broke people equate their bank accounts to their self-worth. Even if their bank account is small, they must at least look rich to others to maintain the appearance of a certain level of status.

You don’t need to earn a lot of money to acquire wealth. I know millionaires who don’t know where their next dollar will come from whereas there are people who live well off of $40,000 a year.

Broke people spend their money on unnecessary things and live from paycheck to paycheck.

Your neighbors Jack and Jill may look like they have it all – big house, nice car, great clothes, but you don’t know what goes on behind closed doors.

Jack and Jill may be up to their eyeballs in debt and fight every night about it.  Maybe they’re leasing their car and have little to no savings.

Or maybe they are doing well. Maybe Jack and Jill make $100,000 more than you or one of them is a trust fund baby. The truth is, you don’t know.

So stop trying to compare yourself to them, stop trying to measure up with what someone else has.

Stay in your own financial lane.

If you can’t afford a new car right now, buy a used one or treat the one you have better.  Put money into savings, pay down bills, buy only what you need and splurge only when you can afford it. Stop hanging out with friends who spend lavishly on things they can’t afford.

Stop hanging out with friends who spend lavishly on things they can’t afford.

If you don’t, you will be miserable. Your financial house will crumble, your relationships will suffer, and your self-worth will plummet.

What makes you great is not how big your bank account is, but how big your heart is.

Wealthy Action to Take Today: Stop buying stuff you don’t need and can’t afford. If you find yourself making purchases to make yourself feel better, work on your self-worth and seek professional help.

Broke Action #3 – Not Saving Enough Money

You have to save for rainy days.  There’s no getting around that.  Not having a cushion can make an unfortunate event worse. Who wants to have to choose between paying rent or getting their car fixed?

No one, that’s who.

When you start to fall behind on your bills, it gets harder and harder to catch up. It’s even harder to get ahead once you’ve fallen behind. And let me tell you, it’s not a good feeling.

Related: 7 Silly Habits of Broke People

Fifteen years ago, I was in a situation where I needed a family attorney, quick, fast and in a hurry. Not only did I not have any money saved, but I wasn’t getting paid until the next week.

I ended up doing something I hate doing and that was to borrow money from family and friends. I thought the situation was degrading, but I made a vow I wouldn’t put myself in it ever again.

What was worse? Many of my friends who I thought were doing well, were waiting for payday like I was. It was a sad situation all around. Not having savings will also force you to make unwise decisions such as tapping into your retirement or obtaining high-interest rate payday loans.

Anyone can start saving.  If you make $1000 a week, you shouldn’t spend 100% of that.  If you are, then you need to either get another job or check your spending habits.

By making small changes in your lifestyle, you can begin to save money.  If you can just save $100 a week, you can put a dent in your savings.  If you eat out every day for lunch, try bringing something from home and put that money away.

Do you have cable?  If so, do you really need 200 channels?  If you’re not really watching tv that much, reconsider your plan or get rid of cable altogether.

Wealthy Action to Take Today: Save at least 10% of your income. Aim to save at least enough funds to cover living expenses for three months or more.

Broke Action #4 – Believing They’re Broke Because of Some Outside Force

Yes, there are people who are broke due to no fault of their own, but this is the exception, not the rule. Studies have shown that certain behaviors distinguish wealthy people from their poorer counterparts.

Forget about the people who were born with money coming out their butt, but consider those who not only gained wealth through hard work but also was able to maintain it.

Wealthy people tend to have an intrinsic locus of control, whereas broke people tend to have an extrinsic one. Locus of control basically deals with something happening because you feel you do or don’t have control over it.

This means that wealthy people often believe that they are wealthy due to their actions, compared to broke people who believe that outside forces are to blame for their circumstances.

For example, a broke person may complain about their minimum wage dead-end job and their inability to make ends meet.  A broke minded individual will believe that they are stuck in their position and will not look for alternatives to making more money.

They won’t seek higher paying jobs or gain additional training that will make them marketable in the workplace.

Forget what people tell you that your income is tied to how hard you work.  That’s not true, it’s all about mindset.  I know many hard working garbage collectors, but I also know many CEOs who vacation a good portion of the year too.

Wealthy people believe that they can increase their income by making smarter choices. They don’t feel as if they are destined for a life of poverty.

They understand that they are in the position they’re in because they know they haven’t done what’s needed yet and they know that they will have to work to get themselves out of it.

The wealthy minded person may ask their boss for a raise, accept opportunities for additional training, or look elsewhere where they will be appreciated for their hard work and effort.

They also look to mentors and people who are where they want to be and model their actions and behaviors in order to get there.

Action to Take Today – Stop thinking you have no control over your financial destiny.  Figure out where you want to be and determine the steps needed to get there.

Broke Action #5 – Making Small Goals

Broke people make small money goals, such as having enough money to pay the electric bill or praying for enough money to hold them until their next payday.

Wealthy people will make big goals and take actions to meet them. They may hope to make enough money to buy a brand new car in cash or to find investors for their start-up in the sum of tens of thousands.

Having goals will give you something to aim for, but there is such a thing to have goals that are too small. If you only aim to get enough money to get your hair done, then that’s what you’ll achieve.

How successful will you feel, however, if it rains as you leave the salon? Poor people pray for extra money to pay bills and make ends meet. Wealthy people want to build empires and leave their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren wealthy.

Wealthy Action to Take Today – Aim high and set bigger goals. If you want to run your own business, set your goal to make enough so you’re able to leave your job within six months or to obtain ten new clients by next month. After you’ve achieved each goal, aim higher.

Broke Action #6 (Bonus) – Depending on Only One Source of Income

A broke man will solely depend on the income given to him by his employer. He’s at the mercy of his boss, who can decide when and if to give him a raise or if he will remain employed.

A wealthy man will have multiple streams of income coming in, so if they do receive the pink slip, this won’t be such a detriment to his livelihood.

Think about your favorite professional athlete. How many times do you hear of bankrupt former NFL or NBA players? The smart and successful ones dabble in other ventures that will keep them rich well after retirement.

Maybe they’re the spokesperson for a popular sports’ drink. Maybe they sell real estate on the side.

Whatever ventures they have going on, they understand that in order to grow wealth you must have multiple streams of income coming in.

They know that a broken leg could be the end of their career and their million dollar contracts can be blown in the wind. Learn from them and think of your own backup plan.

Wealthy Action to Take Today – Assess your skills. Is there anything you can do that will help you earn extra money? Can you sell some of your belongings at a flea market or on Ebay? Can you spend a few hours a week teaching children to play the piano?

Can you start a blog or freelance your photography skills? There are many ways you can make extra money if you put your mind to it. The more streams of income you have coming in, the less likely you will feel dependent on just one.

How to Start a Blog – A Step-by-Step Guide

Want to know how to start a blog?

I love blogging and I believe that anyone who wants to start a blog should. I have made money from blogging to pay off bills and plan on turning this into a full-time gig.

If you’re looking to start a blog for pleasure or profit, I show you how to do so – step by step.

If you have always wanted to start a blog, there’s no better time than the present. Starting a blog is easy and should be done with as little stress as possible.

Trust me – you’ll have to spend so much of your time writing and pushing out content, you won’t have the energy to bother with the technical aspects.

How to Start a Blog

Step 1: Choose a Niche or Topic

This may seem obvious, but before you start your blog you should first determine what you’re going to write about. It’s important and it can make or break your site from the very beginning, so you must definitely put some thought into what you’re going to blog for.

Are you blogging for pleasure or hoping to turn your blog into a profitable business? This is especially important, because you may enjoy talking about bees, but if you don’t have something to share that others are willing to read, then you won’t get any traffic.

Traffic = Money

Before committing to a topic or niche, start researching some of you passions and see if there is a market for it. If you think you have an idea that may work for you, move on to the next step.

Tools to Help You Research Your Topic

  • Google Keyword Tool
  • Neil Patel’s Uber Suggest
  • Pinterest
  • Amazon
  • YouTube

Step 2: Purchase a Domain

Now that you have selected your topic or niche, then you will need to obtain a domain and hosting.

Your domain is the URL address your visitors will type to find you.  I suggest brainstorming a few ideas first before settling on one domain name.

The hosting is where your blog will reside. You will need to purchase hosting. There are many hosting providers out there and you can save a lot of money, especially when you just start your blog. If you’re interested in starting your own blog, Hostgator is a great hosting provider. Get up to 70% off your next website.

Say ‘Yes” to a Self-Hosted WordPress Blog

If you want to start a blog and especially if you want to turn it into a business, you need to have a self-hosted blog. I always recommend getting your blog self-hosted and installing your blog on the WordPress.org platform. It’s not free, but the cost is minimal and so very worth it. You own it and no one can tell you what to do with it.

Planning on making money from your blog? Then you definitely need to get a self-hosted one. Not only is it more professional, but let’s be real here, who’s going to take you seriously if you’re hosting on a free platform? How do you expect to attract sponsors if you are unwilling to make an investment of less than $100 a year? You spend more than that at Starbucks.

Step 3: Sign up for Hosting (These instructions are for Hostgator, which I recommend – however, any hosting plan will work).

Go to Hostgator using my link here and click on the green “Get Started Now” button to begin and move on to the next screen.

Select the plan you would like to purchase. You have the option of the hatchling, baby, and business plans. If you intend to have only one domain and one website, you will be fine with the hatchling plan. If you think you may have multiple websites, you might want to purchase the baby plan.

Enter a domain name you would like to get hosting for. Have a domain already? You can still use that one with your new hosting.

Continue and select your hosting package. You can pay month to month, but your biggest discount is with the 36-month plan.

Enter your billing information.

Select additional services. Additional options may be checked, but you may uncheck the boxes before purchasing them. These are options that you might want to purchase but are not necessary.

Enter the coupon code FREEUPGRADE3, if this block is blank (usually it’s not).

Review your order details.

Click “Checkout Now” to purchase your domain and hosting.

In a few moments, you’ll receive an email with instructions on how to access your hosting cpanel.

Step 4: Choose a Blogging Platform

I suggest choosing a blogging platform before you even determine the name of your blog. Doing so will make things ten times easier. All blogs are built on a platform, think of it as being the frame or the walls of a house.

There are free options such as Blogger and WordPress.com as well as paid ones such as WordPress.org. With all things free, there are limitations, however. Blogger is owned by Google, but just like WordPress.com, you don’t own it. What’s worse, you’ll get a long URL that looks something like http://www.yourblogname.blogspot.com, which no one will remember.

Step 5: Install Your Blogging Platform (I Recommend WordPress)

Once you’ve purchased a domain and hosting, you will need to install WordPress onto your blog. WordPress.org was developed as a blogging platform, so it’s no surprise that it’s the top choice for bloggers. Though there are many others out there, I believe this is the easiest platform to set up.

  • Please note that there are two WordPress platforms:
  • 1) Hosted: WordPress.com and
  • 2) Self-Hosted WordPress.org.

These are the instructions to install WordPress. org onto your self-hosted website.

You can install WordPress on your blog through your hosting provider’s control panel. It takes only a few minutes to install and then you’re done. One click install and you don’t even need to know how to code. It’s free, but it only works on self-hosted sites.

1. Go to Hostgator.com and click on the “Customer Portal” upper right-hand corner to log in.

2. Login to your hosting cpanel with the credentials. Check your email if you forgot to write these down when you signed up. Click on the “Hosting” tab.

3. Scroll down to click on “Launch Quick Install” (there’s also an option to go to WordPress directly as well).

4. On the next screen, fill out the details for your new blog.

5. Next, select the domain you would like to install WordPress on from the drop-down menu. This is easy if you only have one domain.

6. On the next screen, enter the information for the site, such as the name and admin information. I highly recommend not to use “admin” or the complete name of your blog as your username. Make it easy for you to remember, but difficult for hackers to figure out.

Read and accept the terms and conditions and click the green “Install WordPress” button.

The next screen will let you know the installation was a success and you are now ready to design your WordPress site.

Step 6: Choose and Install a WordPress Theme

If you are not a website designer, don’t fret – you can have a professional-looking and beautiful theme for your website. A theme is pretty much the design of your blog. Since I love the house and home references, think about the paint and the furniture within your home.

The theme is how your blog will look and how it differs from the next blog.

As always, there are free and paid options when it comes to determining which WordPress theme to choose. You can go to your WordPress dashboard and find a free theme through its database.

There are literally thousands to choose from and I would suggest that you browse to get a sense of the look and feel you would like for your blog to have.

However, as with all things that are free, there’s a catch. Free themes may look pretty, but they often lack the functionality you will need to have your blog make money for you (if you so choose to make money from it). You will notice that even the free themes have paid options to upgrade to.

You need a premium theme to have a professional-looking blog. And I recommend Genesis from Studio Press.

I build all of my blogs, including Living Simply Fabulous, on the Genesis Framework using child themes to change the look and feel of your site. Genesis is pretty much the gold standard when it comes to WordPress themes and you might have noticed that many of your favorite bloggers use it (check their footer).

In order to use any of the child themes from Studio Press, you must purchase and install the Genesis Framework (the parent theme) first.

The great thing, however, is that the Genesis Framework is a one time purchase. So if you get tired of how your blog looks, you can purchase another child theme. You can purchase the Genesis Framework and a child theme of your choice here.

Currently, I am using Parallax Pro from Studio Press, but there are much more to choose from on their site. You can purchase the Genesis Framework and a child theme from Studio Press through my affiliate link here.

Step 7: Install Plugins

If you’re a programmer, then I give you permission to skip this part – however, if you’re like most of us you’re not. You could hire a programmer to write code for your website to make it do so many awesome things, such as install a pop-up box asking new visitors to join your newsletter, but you don’t need to. That’s too expensive and so unnecessary, especially at this level of blogging.

The next best thing to your own in-house programmer is to install plugins to your WordPress blog.

Plugins add functionality to your website without you hiring a programmer or having to know code yourself. If you want your blog to act and behave a certain way, 9 times out 10 there’s a plugin for that.

Many plugins are free (Yippeee!) with most of them offering premium upgrade options. Plugins are a godsend and without them, my blogs would look a mess.

I have different plugins I use throughout my blogs, however, there are a few that I recommend and use on each one of my blogs (see below).

Adding plugins to your website will add to your load time, so don’t bog your site down with too many plugins. After you become comfortable with WordPress, you can find the plugins that work best with your site and make changes accordingly.

How to Install Plugins

Go to your Dashboard in WordPress and click on Plugins and Add New. You can either upload a plugin you have downloaded or find one using the search bar.

I suggest you install the following plugins on your blog:

(Please note if the plugin will work or is compatible with your theme. If you find that a plugin causes your blog to crash or otherwise act funky, then you will want to find a comparable, but compatible one).

  • Yoast SEO – helps you to create SEO friendly posts
  • Google Analytics – not necessarily a plugin, but you need to have this on your blog nonetheless
  • Pretty Links – allows you to turn ugly affiliate links to a much prettier one
  • Contact Form 7 with Captcha – installs a contact form for your readers to get in touch with you
  • Jetpack – Allows WordPress.org users to use some of the features available to WordPress.com users
  • Akismet – Must have. Blocks a lot of spam from ever reaching you
  • WP Editorial Calendar – Helps you to schedule your posts to go live, leaving you time to do other things.
  • W3 Cache – Helps to speed up your blog, which will improve reader experience
  • No Follow All External Links – Necessary if you plan on using affiliate links throughout your blog

One additional thing to note, plugins can open the door to hackers. Yes, there are many people out there with nothing better to do than to crash your site and mess up all your hard work. Their goal is to steal and sell your personal information. One way they get in is through plugins. To minimize your risk, just make sure to update plugins whenever one comes available. These updates often include bug fixes that will help your blog to run more efficiently.

There you have it. This is how you start a blog from scratch. Very easy.
