What is a side hustle and why is it important?
A side hustle is something you do to make extra money that doesn’t involve quitting your job or starting a business (unless you want to).
Your side hustle doesn’t have to be extravagant. It doesn’t have to feel like another job.
It can just be something you do on the side to help you to:
- pay down debt
- save for a vacation
- make ends meet…
Making an extra $100, $200 or $500+ a month can be life-changing, which is why I encourage people to have multiple streams of income.
Here’s a list of some of the best side hustles you can start today.
Companies look to consumers to help them to decide which products or services to market. Your voice is very important and valuable to them.
One great way to get the consumer’s input is through surveys.
And that’s where you come in.
Completing surveys not only helps the company, but it helps you to make a little side money as well.
It can make the difference from a profitable campaign to one costing a company millions of dollars for a dud.
Most know that you are more likely to complete a fifteen-minute survey if you will be rewarded with an incentive.
Great news for you, because you can give your opinion and earn rewards such as cash and gift cards.
Maximize your earnings by signing up for several companies and answer qualification surveys honestly.
Here are my favorite survey companies:
Like to shop? If so, you may be interested in mystery shopping.
Years ago when I was in-between jobs, I would spend a lot of time completing shops for several companies.
Mystery shopping involves accepting a shop and completing it as specified. You are usually reimbursed for your purchase and/or given a fee for the shop.
Your job is to see if employees know their stuff by asking specific questions and by rating their customer service skills. So if you’re someone who loves completing Yelp reviews, you will probably love mystery shopping.
You can make more money if you sign up for several companies and is very organized and detailed in submitting reports.
I also recommend only accepting shops in your local area. It doesn’t make sense to waste your money on gas because this will not likely be reimbursed.
In addition, consider the amount of money you’re willing to spend up front.
Though you are often reimbursed, there’s a limit and you may have to wait awhile to get your money back. This is a good side gig, so don’t depend on it to take the place of your full-time job.
Some Mystery Shopping companies I recommend:
If you find yourself playing the Grammar Police on social media, you might find a good gig as a proofreader.
Wouldn’t you know, even the best writers have an editor to look over their work to make sure it is free from mistakes.
Why are proofreaders still necessary in 2017?
Grammarly might help with spelling and punctuation, but sometimes a person with a great eye is needed to make sure an article or book is ready for publication.
Having a great command of the English language and a great attention to detail is usually all you need to be a successful proofreader. Some niches pay better, but proofreaders can make a decent amount, especially if they are consistent and build up a good list of clients.
Write for Others
If you love to write, you can make money doing so for others. There are companies out there that need to produce a lot of content, but can’t do it on their own, which means good news for you.
You may be surprised to learn that even bloggers are willing to pay people to write articles for them. The possibilities are limitless and you can find freelancing opportunities, even if you’re not an established writer.
Apply to write for companies such as BlogMutt, Textbroker or visit this extensive list of writing opportunities here. Your rate of pay may depend on the word count and the amount of research and preparation needed.
Sell Products on Amazon
One of the great ways to make money online is by selling products on Amazon.
Most people know about selling on eBay, but Amazon is a great way to sell products through their Fulfilled by Amazon program.
Everyone trust Amazon and you can take advantage of their huge base of customers to reach those that would cost you a lot to do otherwise.
You could start off by selling items you have around the house, however, you will become profitable if you’re able to buy products with high-profit margins in bulk.
Make Stuff and Sell It
My friend Tiffany is a stay at home mom who makes money selling her beautifully sewn bags. She started on Etsy a little while ago and has done very well since then.
She also sells her bags at craft shows and has turned her side gig into a small business.
Join a Network Marketing Company
You or someone you know is either part of a network marketing or direct sales company.
Or at the very least, a consumer of one.
Companies such as Avon, Beachbody, and doterra are well known, even though you probably won’t see much advertising for them. Instead of paying for big ads, they use you to help spread the word about their products.
Network marketing is not easy and it sometimes gets a bad rep for being a pyramid scheme (though 99.9% percent of them are not). It is a great option for those looking to make additional money or start their own businesses with little risk and upfront cost.
If you find a product or service you absolutely love, look into becoming an independent consultant or distributor of a network marketing company. There are hundreds of companies out there, so if you don’t like selling candles you don’t have to.
You could sell insurance, legal services, vacation packages, and even feminine hygiene products!
Not everyone is successful, so if you’re going into this field make sure to get some training first. Hint…your family and friends will run from you so you will have to be creative in finding customers and being a people person to build your team.
I know a few six-figure earners in the industry and I earn hundreds of dollars each year selling health products with this company.
Open a Shopify Store
Sell your products online and accept payments without fuss when you open a Shopify store.
There is a fee associated with opening up your store, but with the robust infrastructure allows you to worry more about what you’re selling instead of how you’re doing it.
Shopify is a great option for not only physical products but information and digital ones as well. This is your online store which allows you to have a space on the internet, all without having a website.
Visit Shopify to start a free 14-day trial and open your store today.
Create and Sell Information Products
I love information products because they are easy to create and sell. It’s a great passive income activity, because once you’re done – you’re done. Information products can be ebooks, ecourses, videos, photos – anything that can be delivered electronically.
To create an ebook you can literally open up a Word document, type, and download it into a .pdf – today.
You’re never too old or too young – you know something others will pay you to learn.
Start a Blog
If you’re looking to make some side money or replace your full-time income, blogging can be an easy way to bring in $500 or more each month.
Many small and mid-size blogs are easily bringing in over hundreds and thousands of dollars each month, so the possibilities are there. If you have an interest in a great niche, you can make money blogging.
Consider, however, that making money from blogging is not immediate and will take some consistency on your part, so don’t create one on a topic you’re not passionate about.
If you haven’t already, go over and read my post on How to Start a Blog.
If you have a good ear and can type fast, you may be great at making money as a transcriptionist. A transcriptionist is someone who takes what is being said and puts it on paper.
A transcriptionist may transcribe audio from videos, interviews, or speeches to name a few.
Expect to earn around $15 to $25 an hour as a work-from-home transcriptionist.
Depending on your experience and education, you may qualify for opportunities which require you to have knowledge of that particular field (such as with court reporting or medical transcription).
Have you ever wondered how the television knows what the actors are saying when you use closed captioning?
No, just me?
Well, closed captioning helps those who are deaf and hard of hearing to enjoy the shows we love to watch. Well, apparently they hire people to watch videos and transcribe what people are saying.
If interested, you can apply to companies such as Aberdeen Captioning or Rev. Some require you to have experience or specialized training. Others do not. All want you to type really fast and perform at practically 100% accuracy.
Just so you know, I once applied to Rev, but didn’t pass their initial exam (even though I thought I did well).
Help others to learn English online as a tutor or an instructor.
Most companies who hire individuals to teach English online with them only require you to be a native speaker and have a strong internet connection.
You will be amazed at the number of people throughout the world who are interested in learning the English language but don’t have the time or means to take a face-to-face class.
As an instructor, you may be responsible for teaching full lessons or just practicing the language in a conversational tone (the best way to learn a language in my opinion).
If you are interested in teaching English to individuals, look into these companies for more information (some, but not all require a degree and/or teacher certification):
If you enjoy helping others to learn new skills, then tutoring can be for you. Though having a degree and experience helps a lot, it’s often not necessary to make money as a tutor.
Online tutoring doesn’t require you to meet clients outside of your home, which makes this a great way for you to make money.
To tutor online, you will need a computer, webcam, and microphone. Considering that most computers have a built-in one these days, you pretty much have all you need to get started.
You could advertise your services on Craigslist, but you will have better luck if you sign up with a reputable company that already has a list of clients available to you.
A few companies to check out for online tutoring gigs:
Take Care of Other People’s Pets
Don’t want to take care of children? How about opening up your home to a pet for the day or night.
Considering how many of us treat our pets like our children, it only makes sense that pet owners would prefer to keep their puppy in a warm and loving home while they’re away.
If you want to be a dog sitter, get signed up with Rover. I found the best sitter on there for my cockapoo and most sitters have gone through additional background screening (most come with insurance, which helps to put your mind at ease).

Become a Virtual Assistant
Small business owners and bloggers in particular, often need additional help to run their businesses.
Most don’t have the budget to hire someone as an employee and will look for someone for a few hours a week.
If you are very organized or have a skill, such as bookkeeping, social media management, or web design, look into becoming a virtual assistant.
Get your resume ready and look for opportunities on Monster, Beyond.com, CareerBuilder, or Zirtual Virtual Office Temps. Also just hang out online with bloggers and you might find someone looking for your help.
Other great places to find virtual assistant opportunities:
Drive People Around
I am amazed at how fast rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft have picked up. Apparently, I’m not the only one who hates the thought of hailing a ride from someone with a bad attitude and obscene rates.
If you have a new-ish four-door car, live in a decent size city, and don’t mind picking up strangers; becoming a driver might be up your alley. To drive for Lyft, sign up here.
Even if you don’t have a car, Uber has a program that helps you to get a car to drive – all credit levels considered. Sign up for Uber here.
Weekly payouts and the ability to set your own schedule, makes driving for these car sharing companies a great option.
Become a House Sitter
People who travel often are always on the lookout for a trusted and reputable person to watch their home while they’re away.
As a house sitter, you will be responsible for making the house looked “lived in” and varied duties such as checking the mail, doing chores, and feeding the pets.
Each job is different and may require you staying in the home or stopping by to check on things. Just note that many house sitting jobs will involve pets, so if you love Fido, this may be the gig for you.
Take Care of Other People’s Children
If you enjoy children and have the time to help out parents looking for a night out, you should consider providing child care services.
Qualities such as energy and patience in addition to a repertoire of fun activities are plenty to keep children entertained and busy.
You may be able to take care of children of any age and your rates will be determined by your geographic location (bigger cities and the suburbs can command more).
Check with your local laws to make sure of what, if any, certifications or licenses you may need. You don’t want to get in any trouble that can cost you money (or your freedom – YIKES). Even if it’s not required in your area, taking a first-aid and CPR class wouldn’t hurt.
Make Money With Your Phone
There are thousands (if not more) apps out there that help you to earn money. These fancy phones come with high price tags and expensive plans, so why not use it to help pay for it?
You will be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t have a smartphone. Harder still is to find someone who doesn’t have their phone attached to their hip twenty-four hours a day.
This is great news as there are apps that help you to earn extra money with the push of a button. As long as you have a phone, you have a way to make money.
Here are some of the best money making apps you can download to your phone. I use most of these on this list on a fairly consistent basis. I have an iPhone, but most of these are also available on Android.
All of these apps are free to download, so give them a try if you’re looking for ways to make money with your phone.
Become a YouTube Star
According to Adweek, YouTube “captures more viewers aged 18 to 34 than any cable network”, therefore making it a great platform for other young people to showcase their talents and bubbly personalities.
The low barrier to entry makes it quite easy to get started on YouTube now. And no, you don’t have to be a teen to be successful.
To become a YouTube star, all you need is a camera (an iPhone works just as well when you’re getting started) and something interesting to say for your video can be seen by people from around the world.
YouTubers make most of their money through ads (Google Adsense and other ad networks), sponsorships, and selling their own products such as t-shirts and books.
Do your research first, but I’ve found tutorials do best. So don’t worry if you’re not super attractive, pull out your camera and start recording.
Sell Your Photos
If you’re good with a camera and have a great eye, consider selling your photos.
There are so many money-making opportunities for photographers (don’t need to be a professional, novices can make money, too).
Take your photos and sell them on stock photo sites or do live photo shoots. There are plenty of models and brides who are always looking for great photographers.
Settling on a niche may garner more work than trying to focus on everything and everyone.
Great places to sell your photos:
Freelance Your Skills
In your regular job you probably have skills that can be transferred to your side hustle.
Writing, web designing, and coding all make great freelance gigs.
Once you build up your clientele you can charge higher rates and meet with less clients (therefore freeing up your time).
Recommend Products to Others
Do you know that most companies have some type of referral or affiliate partner? Big companies such as Amazon, Target, and Walmart all have referral programs.
As an affiliate, you can refer others to buy products or services. If they buy, you will be paid a commission.
This doesn’t cost the purchaser anything extra and it’s free to sign up.
To check to see if a company offers such a program, check the bottom of their website and look for “referral program” or “affiliate program”. Some require specific qualifications, but there are many that only require you register for an account.
You can learn more about affiliate marketing from Pat Flynn here.
Affiliate marketers make big bucks, but you can start small with recommending products and services you absolutely love to family and friends (something you probably already do, so why not get paid for it).
If you have a blog, pretty decent social media following or email list, this may be a great side hustle for you to consider.
Great Places to Find Products to Promote:
Rent Out Your Home
If you have an empty room or house, why not rent it out on Airbnb? You can possibly make more money renting it out to travelers than to someone long term, especially if you live in a tourist area.
Airbnb has an extensive service and you are able to learn something about the people before you let them into your home.
Depending on your location, you can literally earn your mortgage payment from renting out a week or two (especially during tourist months).
In addition to renting out space in your home, Airbnb now allows you to advertise your services for people looking for something to do while in town, called Experiences.
Sightseeing tours, cooking classes, and excursions work well. You can charge by the hour or the day. So, if you have a particular skill about something or very knowledgeable about your hometown, sign up for Experiences with Airbnb.
As a website tester, you will be paid to visit sites and test their usability. You will give your opinion to an owner about their website and how easy it is for you to navigate it.
You are usually paid by the hour, but some companies may pay you per job.
Some companies also require you to record your voice and screen while you visit each site, so you may be required to have a webcam and microphone.
Another requirement for these companies is that you must speak and write English well (since some may want you to write a report after completion).
