Ah, a brand new year.
This is the time when everyone is super pump about meeting their goals this year.
Lose weight. Make more money. Fall in love….
Like for real, this time.
But, of course, often than not, many of our goals fall by the wayside by February and in March they’re a distant memory.
Don’t believe me? Look in the window of your nearest gym in January. Then check back in March. I bet you $5 you’ll see the vast difference.
Trust me, we all have great intentions. But for some reason or not, we don’t follow through with our goals. And when we don’t see results, we give up and vow to start over again next year.
This year is going to be different. No matter if you want to change jobs, make more money, lose weight, or just be nicer (smile), there’s a way to make your goals a reality.
I’m going to show you why you never meet the goals you set for yourself and how you can change that.
Here are the 5 ways to meet your goals this year.
Make Realistic Goals
One reason many of us fail to reach our goals each year is that we set ones we can’t possibly reach. We set ourselves up for failure from the start and never reach our goals.
If you plan to make six figures this year in your business, but you haven’t even started one yet; that might not be a realistic goal for you to make.
The chance of reaching your goals is possible if they’re actually attainable in the first place.
When planning out your goals for the year, make sure they’re SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely) goals. When you follow the SMART acronym, you’re setting yourself up for success and more likely to meet your goals.
Ask yourself if you actually see yourself climbing Mount Everest or getting a gold medal. Unless you’re actually a hiker or currently training, these goals aren’t meant for you.
Write Your Goals Down
If you fail to plan, you will plan to fail. It’s just that simple. Not planning on how you’re going to meet your goals is like going on a road trip with no map.
You may get there eventually, but you’re going to take many wrong turns and you will have ended up adding miles and time on your journey.
When you plan your goals out, and actually write them down on paper, you are more likely to be successful. According to a Harvard Business study, people who write their goals down are 3 times more likely to meet their goals.
So where should you write your goals?
It doesn’t matter. I love writing in my journal, but post-it notes are just as good to use.
When you make your goals for the new year, not only write them down but put them in an obvious place so that you can see them in to fruition.
Break Goals Into Manageable Chunks
Do you know another reason many of us never meet our goals each year? We make them too big to handle and then we get overwhelmed.
In turn, forcing us to give up.
We’re not going to be about that life this year.
To make your goals more manageable, break them into small milestones that you are most likely able to meet quicker. When you do this, you’ll be able to meet your bigger goals by the end of the year.
For example, if you’re trying to lose 50 pounds this year, break it up into smaller chunks. You will have a better chance of losing that 50 pounds if you say, “I will lose 5 pounds by the end of January. Then I will lose 5 pounds by the end of February”…and so on.
If you lose those 5 pounds, you’ll have not only have a sense of accomplishment, but you will also feel as if that 50 pounds are not as far away as you first believed.
Make a Plan
“If you fail to plan, you will plan to fail”.
This quote always rings true and especially around the new year.
Another reason people fail to meet their New Year goals and resolutions is that they fail to plan how they will execute them.
I can say that I will make more money all year long, but if I don’t devise a plan on how I’m going to do it – it won’t happen.
Going back to our 50-pound weight loss example from above, a great way to make that happen is to plan it out.
How are you going to lose the weight? Stop eating junk food? Exercise more? Of course, but it’s still not a plan on how you’re going to do it.
Try setting a plan to exercise 30 minutes a day on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Or walking 10,000 steps a day (tracked by your Fitbit) and adopting a vegan lifestyle. Commit to keeping a food diary and avoiding bread and red meat.
No matter how you go about doing it, just make a plan on how you’ll reach your goals.
Reflect and Revise
One way many people slack up and abort their goals by the middle of the year is that they try to use the same goals they wrote in January to work in their lives in August.
Look. We’re not trees. We change. We become different people. Things happen to us in our lives that change the people we are.
This is life.
In order to meet your goals for the entire year, reflect on them to see if they still fit in your life.
Let’s say you decided to change your diet, but realize that you’re missing out on important nutrients you need or that an illness forces you to change the way you eat. Are you just going to give up?
Just make changes that will not only fit your life as it is at that point but also allows you to meet your goals. Revise them.
I remember one year making a goal to go to the gym three times a year. After a month or so, I realize that I didn’t like exercising with other people. Besides, I use only two pieces of equipment – the bike and treadmill.
I figured out quickly that I could still meet my fitness goals if I canceled my gym membership and just worked out at home.
My fitness goal was most likely to be met if I stayed true to myself and make changes where necessary.
Knowing why we fail at our goals each year will hopefully give you the chance to meet yours like a boss.
