Truth is, as we get older we become less active. Well, that’s the case for a lot of us. It’s much worse for those of us who are forced to sit behind a desk all day. Living a sedentary lifestyle is not good for our heart nor our hips.
And we know this. We know that there are many benefits to exercise such as reduced stress, weight loss, and decreased risk of developing diabetes and heart disease.
We just lack the motivation to get up and get those 10,000 steps a day or 30 minutes of exercise 5 times a week.
So, what’s the solution for normal folks like yourself who need a push to get your heart rate up?
Most of us aren’t lazy. Life just gets in the way and we’re not motivated to take that brisk walk or jog around the neighborhood. In fact, I found a few apps that will help motivate you to all the while adding some pockt change.
There are apps out there that will pay you to exercise.
Studies show that money is a great motivator when it comes to getting fit and losing weight. So, when I found out there was a way to get paid to exercise, I grabbed my phone and Fitbit and started counting my coins (I mean working out).

Here are a few great apps that pay you to exercise.
If you really need a strong financial incentive to workout, consider making a bet with Healthy Wage.
With Healthy Wage, you set a wage to lose a specific amount of weight (which you can’t do without exercising or eating healthy).
If you meet your goal you get to split the pot with other successful wagers. If you don’t, you miss out. A great incentive to getting off of your butt. There’s also a chance to win $10,000.
I thought Healthy Wage was such a great motivator for getting healthy and losing weight that I wrote about it here.
Similar to Healthy Wage, Diet Bet allows you to put up a wager to lose weight.
You can join challenges where you’ll put money into the pot. Anyone who has lost 4% of their body weight will split the pot at the end of the challenge. If you are competitive, Diet Bet is a great way to race against others all the while getting fit and losing weight.
You’re probably wondering, “how will they really know if I lost the weight”? They each have safeguards in place, such as taking a picture of yourself and the scale and uploading them. This helps to keep everyone honest and makes the challenge fair to everyone.
Another wager type program, Step Bet allows you to join a challenge and bet on yourself based on the steps you make each week. Instead of betting on your weight loss, you’re setting the price on the number of steps.
The best part of Step Bet, in my opinion, is that they will take into account historical data from your tracker and set a goal for you. So, if you have a Fitbit, they’ll look at the steps you’ve made beforehand. This is great because it helps you to set a goal that is realistic and reachable.
As with most wage-type programs and apps, Step Bet will split the pot amongst its successful challengers. It’s an app, so you will need to download it onto your phone. Go to Step Bet to learn more.
Hey…you’re going to have to buy workout gear anyway, so why not get cash back for your purchases? When you sign up for Ebates, you can get cash back on purchases made through participating retailers online. It’s FREE to sign up and you’ll earn a bonus just for becoming a member.
Previously known as Achievemint, Achievement is another app that will pay you to exercise. For every 10,000 points, you’ll earn $10 which you can request payout through PayPal.
Achievement pays you for the following activities:
- Tracking steps
- Sleep and
You’ll earn 50 points just for updating your profile and connecting an app or device to your account, so do that first when you sign up. Getting fit with friends to improve your chances of reaching your fitness goals and Achievement will award you 100 points for every friend you refer to the app.
Go to Achievement to sign up for your free account today.
My son introduced me to this app, which awards you sweatcoins for the steps you take. Each day you earn coins to redeem for items in their catalog, such as gift cards, fitness gear, or other deals such as
One issue is that it only calculates the steps you take outdoors. So, you will definitely need to get some fresh air to earn sweatcoins.
Go to Sweatcoin, the app that pays you to get fit, and download the app now. Available on Apple and Android.
Walgreens Balance Rewards
If you’re already a Walgreens Balance Rewards member, you know how great it is to earn points for your purchases.
Walgreens wants you to get moving and will award you reward points for fitness activities.
You can sync your account with apps such as MyFitnessPal or devices such as the Fitbit (select models). In addition to earning 250 balance reward points for adding a device, you’ll have the opportunity to earn automatically. So, lace up those tennis shoes.
If you live near a Walgreens, this may be a great option for you. Go to Walgreens to sign up.
Exclusively for your phone (iOS and Android), Bounts awards you points for being active and joining challenges. You’ll be able to use these points towards offers or to join additional challenges.
You can sync your fitness tracker to Bounts to track your activities. If you’re very active and competitive, you can bump up to their premium plan. Ready to sign up for Bounts, click here.
Now, will these apps help everyone to workout more or make money? Not really.
The potential is there to make money while getting healthy with these great apps. However, if you’re not motivated by money – this may not be for you. Hopefully, you’ll find that motivator to adopting a healthier lifestyle.
For the rest of us, cash is king. If you find these apps helpful for working out more, let me know. Know of any other great apps that pay you to exercise that aren’t on here?
Oh by the way…most of these apps work best with a fitness tracker. If you don’t have one, you should invest in one. My favorite is the Fitbit Versa, but check the list of compatible devices for the apps you choose.
